Carroll for Tevez in swap deal breaks down...Where does that leave big Andy now?

The writing is on the wall for Andy Carroll at Liverpool after it was revealed that the Reds tried to offload him to Manchester City in a straight swap for Carlos Tevez last week.

It would be a dramatic understatement to say that the lanky striker has failed to justify the £35 million Liverpool splashed out on him a year ago, and having grown frustrated with his consistently poor performances, a desperate Liverpool are prepared to cut their losses.

According to The Guardian today, Liverpool officials contacted Manchester City football administrator Brian Marwood on Thursday proposing a straight swap involving Carlos Tevez, who hasn’t played for City since September after getting the hump over a prolonged row between himself and manager Roberto Mancini.

Numerous clubs such as AC and Inter Milan and PSG have signalled their interest in the moody Argentine, but the chances of a possible move to any of those clubs seem to have gone dead in recent weeks, prompting Liverpool to make their move.

City boss Roberto Mancini had previously indicated his admiration for Carroll when he was at Newcastle, but it’s one thing saying you like a player when he’s at a mid-table club and another actually signing him when it’s patently clear that he’s out of his depth at Anfield.

In any case, Marwood rejected the offer out of hand, which we imagine was a pretty darn easy decision to make. Even if Tevez could be a liability and must be a tad out of shape having not touched a ball for four months or so, most pundits would agree that he’s far superior to Carroll.

Besides, it’s not as if City exactly need Carroll, with six foot plus Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko already at the club and the beanpole-like Emmanuel Adebayor still under contract, even if the chances of him playing under Mancini again seem remote.

Given City’s response to Liverpool’s request, it seems highly unlikely that any deal will go through, but a thought must be spared for poor Carroll, who will be thinking that his days at Anfield are very much numbered after these damning revelations.
